OK, not exactly. But it can be.
Recently, I bought a pearl bracelet online. When it arrived, I was surprised at how dull the pearls looked. Not iridescent like I’d assumed it would be. Then I put it on — and I remembered what someone once told me. It’s the oil on your skin that creates the pearls’ luster. Sure enough, they shined right up. And after a full day of wear, they look luminous.
Writing is a lot like that bracelet. As much as I may like a piece when it I first write it, it needs a little wear — some critiquing and editing — before it really shines.
